Building Community Through Art

Sometimes, a mural is about more than just brushstrokes on a wall. At the Erin Woods Community Association, a collaborative art project became an important source of community connection, sparking conversations and providing opportunities for neighbours to work together.   

In 2025, Trellis’ Community Development team, Planet Youth, and Indigenous artist Flora Johnson were approved for the City of Calgary Arts and Culture Microgrant to create an Indigenous mural. Five youth artists worked closely with Flora in a collaborative process that combined creativity with cultural learning. Grounded in the Seven Sacred Teachings, Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility and Truth, the youth explored each teaching’s significance through ongoing conversations with their mentor.

The mural, titled “Inspiration”, gradually took shape on the wall of the Erin Woods Community Association. As the painting came to life, it drew the attention of residents passing by. Some shared curiosity, others strong opinions, but each interaction became an opportunity for dialogue.

With patience and clarity, Flora explained the cultural meaning behind the artwork, gradually transforming skepticism into understanding. Community members soon became active participants, joining in the painting, learning new skills, and contributing to the project. Their growing support was evident as neighbours continued to volunteer their time and drop off snacks for the youth artists.

The mural was completed in two months thanks to the extensive volunteer efforts of youth, residents, and community partners. To celebrate, a mural unveiling was hosted at the community hall, bringing together youth artists, their families, Elders, neighbours, and the Ward 9 Councilor to reflect on the project’s impact and honor this powerful example of community learning and connection. It was especially powerful to see Indigenous and non-Indigenous people celebrating and sharing an Indigenous meal together, a moment that symbolized unity, respect, and the spirit of coming together.

The mural has brought renewed attention to the community hall, transforming it into a local landmark. It has given the neighbourhood a vibrant, positive identity, and residents are proud to call it their own. “Inspiration” is just one beautiful example of what is possible when opportunities are created for dialogue and work towards a shared goal.
